Dear Jose

I am not sure why you ask these questions. If you are looking for biblical reference for lent, the best one is the one that talks about Jesus’ fasting and lent for forty days (Matthew 4:2). All our lent used to be for 40 days. During the course of history we reduced the days of all except the great lent. Jesus asked us to fast and pray that the evil tendencies may go away (Matt. 17:21; Mark 9:29). There are other examples of pious people fasting which shall be a model for our life (Acts 10:30; 14:23; 27:33; 1 Cor. 7: 5). Fasting and praying was for the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1: 12 ff.) and for the direction of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2,3). Also see passages like Matt. 4:2; 6:16, 17, 18; Matt. 9:14,15. We also see that Moses fasted for forty days on the top of the mountain that he received from God the commandments (Ex. 34:28); Israel fasting on the death of Saul (1 Sam. 31:13; 2 Sam. 2:1, 1 Chro. 10: 12); David fasting (2Sam. 12:16, 21, 22, 23); Elijah fasting (1 Kings 19:8). Also see. Ezra 8:21, 23; Neh. 1:4; Esther 4:3, 16; 9:31; Daniel 9:3; Joel 2:12, 15; Jonah 3:5etc.

Regarding your second question please go to my blog and see the posting. and listen to the audio of the Bible Study at posted in the skydrive of my MSN!378

Dear Thirumeni
How to make prostration?  Which one to touch the ground? head & nose OR mouth & nose?

Dear Mini

Prostration in principle is kissing the feet of the Lord. We have to kneel and kiss the ground. This is same with kissing the hand of a priest, of the bishop or of the Catholicos. We are not following the right pattern in this regard also. We are supposed to take the hand of the priest/ bishop/ Catholicos and kiss it. Instead now people simply stand and priest/ bishop/ Catholicos has to search for the head and touch the forehead. Some people even if they take the hand, they touch the forehead or the nose.

Dear Thirumeni,

While watching shalom tv, I heard one catholic priest say ' the coonan cross oath was not against Rome or Pope but was against the Portugese. Majority of the churches and members stood under Rome and a minority - less than 1/3 went behind Antioch.' In addition, Rome had a supremacy over other patriarcates and the malankara church was under it. Is it true? It is totally against our teachings and a plan to mislead people. Moreover malankara catholics claim the title malankara metropolitan while marthomites claim the throne of St. Thomas. Seeing these I feel a bit disturbed.

Dear thirumeni,
Today my questions are about John the Baptist. Did he eat locusts? Is it a translation error? Why he sends his disciples to Jesus and asks him whether they should wait someone else though he testified him as the Christ? Why the least in the kingdom of God is greater than John?

Hope you are fine. Pray for us - Saju

Dear Saju
Regarding your questions
1. Yes John ate locusts (Matt. 3:4). There is no translation error. Lot of cultures use this as a favorite meal.
2. John wanted to be quite sure that his mission was fulfilled before he faced the death and so sent his disciples to Jesus to make sure that it was Jesus whom he baptized.
3. Membership in the kingdom of God is quite mysterious. No one can understand its nature and who is eligible. It remains a mystery until it is accomplished.

Dear Thirumeni,
Thank you for your answers. Please clear these also.
1. Who was Balaam? A priest? Why does God allow him to go to Balak but later get angry and blocks his way ? Num 22: 20-23.
2. What is meant by sorcery? Num 24:1
3. Why did the israelites kill him later?
4. We see a six cornered star (David Star) on Israel's flag and synagogues. Is it the star of Rephan that we read in acts 7:43? The same can be seen in many Hindu temples also.
Hope you are fine. Pray for us. With prayers - Saju.
